Dental Restoration Treatment for Tooth Decay Damage

Dental restoration refers to a dental procedure that restores the morphology and structural integrity of a damaged tooth. A common concern that dental restoration treats is tooth decay damage. There are several available dental restoration options for tooth decay, depending on the severity and location of the damage.

Treating the different types of tooth decay

Tooth decay is a broad term, and there are diafferent severity levels of decay. The method of dental restoration depends largely on the severity of the decay, and it is helpful to understand how a dentist might treat minor, severe and deep tooth decay differently.

Minor tooth decay

Minor tooth decay is most often treated with a dental filling. A dental filling involves applying tooth-colored dental material (e.g., amalgam) to a tooth that has minor decay. This improves the appearance of the tooth and more importantly, protects the tooth from further harm. It is more affordable to treat minor tooth decay with a dental filling than it is to treat severe tooth decay with invasive treatments, which is why noticing the early signs of decay and taking action is strongly encouraged.

Severe tooth decay

Severe tooth decay is harder to treat. This is because a dental filling cannot always adequately treat larger amounts of decay. In these instances, dentists often recommend a dental crown or a dental veneer, particularly if the root of the tooth is not decayed or infected. A dental filling may be an option for moderate levels of decay. A dental crown is often the best choice for molars and premolars and can completely cover the decayed portion of the tooth to strengthen it and protect it from further harm. A dental veneer may work well for front teeth.

Decay toward the tooth root

Dental restoration treatment can also treat decay that extends deep into the top or toward the root of the tooth, where the nerves and blood vessels exist. However, this treatment is often more extensive. A dental filling typically is not enough for deep decay. Many patients need root canal therapy to remove the decayed portion of the tooth and replace it with a healthy filling material. After root canal therapy, many dentists recommend a dental crown to cover, strengthen and support the natural tooth.

How to prevent tooth decay

Dentists will also work with patients to prevent tooth decay after treatment. This includes educating the patient on how to practice good oral hygiene through proper brushing and using mouthwash and floss. Dentists often recommend fluoride treatment to patients who have weakened or vulnerable tooth enamel and are at an increased risk of tooth decay.
