How Mini Dental Implants and Dental Implants are Different

Mini dental implants are a recent innovation of traditional implants. Dental implants have grown to become a popular method of treatment for people who have teeth that are severely damaged or even missing. However, as dentistry has progressed greatly, it can be helpful to know what the other options are. There may be a more suitable option.

While traditional dental implants and mini dental implants are quite similar, there are a few key differences. When considering dental implants, it can be helpful to be aware of the differences in order to make the best decision possible. Find out more as we outline these differences!

Traditional dental implants

Traditional dental implants are used for a number of reasons, but mostly to replace or restore teeth. They are small titanium screw-shaped surgical components that are placed within a person’s bone. Because dental implants are made of titanium, they naturally fuse with the bone over time. Also, the body doesn’t typically reject them because they are bio-compatible.

The bonding process usually takes a few months in order for it to be completely ready. Once the implant has bonded with the bone, an abutment will attach to the artificial tooth so that natural smiling and eating can be done again. Typically, these artificial teeth will consist of dental crowns or appliances like denture-supported implants.

Mini dental implants

Mini dental implants are actually quite similar to traditional implants. This is because the process is very similar and the end goal is too. However, the key differences are the size, the placement process and occasionally the purpose. As the name says it all, mini implants are smaller than traditional implants.

The size of the implants also goes hand in hand with the purpose. Traditional implants are dependent on a strong supportive jawbone. But, mini implants aren’t as heavily reliant on this. Mini implants can be used when the jawbone isn’t dense enough to support traditional implants.

Another thing that is different about mini dental implants is when they are placed. This is because they don’t require an abutment as traditional implants do. Mini implants have a small ball on one side of it so that the artificial tooth can attach to it.

All in all, mini dental implants offer the same functionality as traditional implants do but they are often recommended in temporary situations. If a person is seeking a quick treatment, then mini dental implants may be a better option than that of traditional implants. This is because the mini implant process doesn’t take as long.
