Pros and Cons of Common Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments

There are a variety of treatments used in cosmetic dentistry to deal with a wide range of issues that leave people feeling unhappy about the way their teeth look. Some of these issues include: chipped, broke, discolored, disfigured, infected and missing teeth.

Advantages and disadvantages of common dental treatments

Thanks to cosmetic treatments, it is now possible for anyone to get the perfect smile they have always dreamed of having. Here are the pros and cons of standard treatments that can be used to fix a person's smile:

1. Veneers

Veneers are thin shells that are used to cover the front of stained, discolored, disfigured, chipped or misaligned teeth. These devices are usually made from ceramics and porcelain, and they look just like natural teeth. Once inserted, the patient's smile is instantly restored, and people will not be able to tell the person has had any dental work.

Pros:

  • Instantly restores the wearer's smile.
  • Veneers are made from stain-resistant materials, making it easier to keep stains and discoloration once inserted.
  • Veneers can last up to 15 years with proper oral hygiene.

Cons:

  • A small portion of enamel is removed to make space for the veneer.
  • Enamel is a protective cover for dentin, and once it is removed, the front of the tooth will need to be protected by a dental device.
  • One of the pricier alternatives.
  • Certain habits like tooth grinding can damage veneers.

2. Dental implants

These are dental devices that are used to replace missing teeth and their roots. This helps to prevent bone tissue from deteriorating since the implant keeps the jawbone adequately stimulated. Getting implants consists of two stages: the surgical insertion of a metal rod or screw into the patient's jawbone and attaching a crown to the abutment on the external-facing end of the implant. The crown is typically attached three to six months after the implant is inserted. This is to allow for osseointegration.
Pros:

  • Implants can last a lifetime with good at home dental care.
  • Taking care of an implant is no different from taking care of a real tooth.
  • Implants look and function just like real teeth.
  • Implants help to prevent bone tissue loss.

Cons:

  • Implants are the priciest solution for missing teeth.
  • The entire process of getting implants can take up to seven months.
  • Not all patients are eligible for implants.

3. Composite bonding

Here is one of the most affordable dental treatments performed in cosmetic dentistry. It is used to address issues like chipped, stained, deformed or discolored teeth. During the procedure, the dentist roughens the tooth with a unique solution. This step is done to make it easier for the composite to bond with the tooth. The resin is then applied to the tooth, and it is molded into the desired form. It is then hardened with ultraviolet light.

Pros:

  • An affordable solution.
  • Virtually impossible to detect.
  • The entire process takes less than an hour.

Cons:

  • Not as long-lasting as other solutions.
  • Can only be used to address a limited number of dental issues.
  • Additional bonding will be required down the road to maintain the appearance of the tooth.
