Removing Tartar from Teeth

TartarIt is completely normal to have some level of tartar buildup on your teeth. Tartar buildup is the result of plaque accumulation on your teeth that eventually harden and turn into a solid film. Having tartar on your teeth is not good for your oral health. It leads to tooth decay (and all the dental issues that can arise from that like cavities and infections), and gingivitis.

These are two of the most common dental diseases that lead to people losing their teeth. Here are a few things you can do to keep your teeth safe from tartar:

Tips to prevent tartar

1. Brush twice daily

One of the most effective ways to keep tartar at bay is by brushing your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing will not actually remove tartar from your teeth, but it does remove plaque which eventually turns into tartar. It is often best to go with a toothpaste that comes with tartar control.

2. Floss daily

There are many tight spaces around your teeth that even the smallest bristles on a brush could never reach. Regardless of how hard these crevices are to clean, food particles still accumulate there and eventually turn into plaque. After turning into plaque, the particles can turn into tartar. You can prevent that from happening by flossing at least once a day. For maximum protection, floss whenever you notice something is sticking between your teeth.

3. Get a tartar removal kit

If you notice some tartar accumulation on your teeth and want it gone immediately, you can purchase a home use tartar removal kit. These kits come with a metal scraper similar to the one your dentist uses which can be used to scrape off tartar buildup on your teeth. Use a mirror so that you can see exactly what you are doing.

For improved safety, the scrapers that come with these kits consist of a softer metal than what a dentist commonly uses. This option is best for people with healthy gums.

4. Visit a dentist

The most effective way to remove tartar from your teeth is by going to your dentist. Your oral professional has lots of experience dealing with this, and he/she has access to specialized tools that will remove tartar from places the scraper cannot reach. Your dentist also has angled mirror tools that allow him/her to remove tartar from the back of your mouth.

During your appointment, your dentist will start off by conducting a full examination of your mouth looking for signs of health issues like tooth decay, gum disease, TMJ disorders, oral cancer, and pretty much every other oral problem you can think off.

After the examination, your dentist will use a metal scraper to remove tartar from your teeth. Next, a vibrating tool will shake off tartar from places the scraper cannot reach. Once complete, your dentist will polish your teeth with a special paste. You will then rinse out your mouth. Once complete, your dentist will perform a professional flossing and apply a fluoride treatment.
