The Patient’s Guide for Same Day Tooth Replacement

It is now possible to get same day tooth replacement. This option is particularly beneficial for people dealing with hectic schedules. Procedures like composite fillings, veneers, crowns, and implants no longer have to involve multiple visits to the dentist. Thanks to CEREC technology, these treatments can now be performed with a single visit to the dentist.

For people missing one or more of their natural teeth, dental implants are one of the best options to get them fixed. These devices mimic the look and function of the patient's natural teeth roots. This device and options help to maintain healthy bone tissue and prevent the remaining teeth from shifting.

Traditional Dental Implants

The traditional technique for installing implants can take close to a year, and it often involves three visits to the dentist.

During the first visit, the dentist removes the damaged tooth and its root. The extraction socket is given anywhere from four to six months to heal properly. The hole is filled with new bone tissue during this period.

During the second visit, the dentist will surgically insert the implant – typically a titanium rod or screw – into the person's jawbone. It is then given time to fuse with the jaw bone. This process is called osseointegration, and it takes anywhere from three to six months.

Once the bond is secured, a dental crown is then attached to the external-facing end of the implant.

Same Day Tooth Replacement

Patients who do not have time for multiple visits to the dentist can take advantage of immediate replacement. This procedure is typically reserved for those with good oral and overall health. Factors that can negatively affect the installation of implants include:

  • Smoking
  • Immune system deficiencies
  • Certain medications like bisphosphonates
  • Teeth damaging habits like bruxism

People who opt for same day tooth replacement are also required to be committed to maintaining proper oral hygiene. The person also needs to avoid things that can put excessive pressure on the implant such as chewing on hard things like ice. Patients also need to have adequate jaw bone tissue to be eligible for this procedure.

Here are the steps involved with immediate tooth replacement:

1. Planning

There is much planning that goes into the instant loading of dental implants. The dentist will go over the patient's medical and dental history, and diagnostic tests like CT scans and X-rays will be taken.

These tests will be used to determine if the patient has an adequate bone tissue structure. If an implant will be placed inside the socket of a newly extracted tooth, bone grafting is typically performed to create a hard base for the implant.

Gum grafting may also be performed to improve the aesthetics of the implant and crown. The size and position of the implant will also be determined during this phase.

2. Extraction

If a tooth is severely damaged, it will be extracted in preparation for the implant.

3. Placement

The implant is then surgically inserted into the hard base during the final stage. It must be placed in stable bone tissue to prevent any movement. A crown created with CEREC technology is then placed on top of the implant. That finalizes the procedure.
