What to Consider With Orthodontics for Adults

Orthodontics Trophy Club, TX

We often don’t think about what to do about issues with our teeth when we’re adults, but the truth is, orthodontics is just as important for adults as they are for children. Several issues can be treated by a dentist even once we reach adulthood. The way we are treated, how long treatment takes, the recovery time, and several other factors are different when we’re adults instead of children. It is important to understand the pros and cons of orthodontics before deciding what type of solution is right for your unique situation.

Pros and cons of orthodontics for adults

Here are some of the good and bad points that adults should consider when going to a dentist to seek treatment.

Pro: Treatment is still effective no matter your age

One thing that keeps adults from getting the help they need is that they think they are too old or have outgrown the ability to wear braces to correct their dental issues. The truth is, this is not nearly the case.

According to some estimates, upwards of 30% of patients who receive braces, retainers, or other corrective dental applications are over 18. Anyone with a healthy set of teeth and good oral hygiene is eligible for teeth straightening treatment. Your dentist will need to evaluate your condition and specific needs, but in most cases, treatment for different teeth issues is still an effective solution.

Con: Treatment may take longer

One issue adults face that is different from children and teens is that certain treatments like braces can take longer than average. This is typical because the conditions that need to be corrected are much further advanced than younger individuals. Correction is still possible, though it is important to talk with your dentist about the process and whether you can commit to the complete treatment plan.

Pro: Improved oral health

No matter your age, correcting an issue with your teeth with orthodontic procedures will improve not only the look and feel of your teeth but your overall oral health. Fixing problems like overbites, underbites, crowding, and gaps can improve your quality of life and make eating and smiling more enjoyable.

Your dentist can share with you the benefits of corrective procedures as well as the risks and time necessary to have them done.

Con: It may reveal other dental issues

Another concern that some adults have when seeking orthodontic treatment for existing issues is that going in for treatment may reveal problems that they were unaware of, such as damage to teeth and gums, gum disease, jawbone disorders, or other issues. While this is certainly possible and can be a deterrent to getting necessary procedures, your dentist will work with you to ensure that any problems can be addressed and ultimately taken care of.
