Why Preventative Dental Care Is Important
Preventative dental care is an essential part of good oral hygiene. It saves patients money and time down the road and reduces the odds of oral issues developing in the first place. Having a healthy set of teeth is important, considering the fact the condition of a person's teeth is one of the first things people notice during interactions. Unhealthy teeth are viewed as unattractive and a sign of poor oral hygiene, while healthy teeth are viewed as attractive and a sign of success.
Given the assumptions often made based on the condition of a person's teeth, it is no surprise that those with compromised teeth often find themselves feeling less confident than usual.
What is preventative dental care?
The things dentists recommend patients do regularly to maintain the condition of their teeth fall under this umbrella. Some of them include:
1. Brushing at least twice daily
Brushing the teeth at least twice a day is the single most important thing a person can do to keep their teeth healthy. One time should be right before one goes to bed, since saliva production is reduced while sleeping, increasing the risk of tooth decay. It is also best to use a fluoride toothpaste that has the American Dental Association's seal of approval.
2. Floss daily
Flossing at least once a day is equally important when it comes to keeping tooth decay at bay. Flossing performs the same function as brushing: removing food particles and plaque for teeth surfaces. Since a toothbrush cannot reach the tight spaces between teeth, flossing is used to clean these areas.
3. Avoiding foods and beverages that lead to tooth decay
Staying away from foods and beverages that damage one's teeth is an equally important part of preventative dental care. The worst foods for teeth are those that contain lots of sugar and acids, like soda, pasta sauce and citrus juices. Stay away from these as much as possible when trying to keep teeth healthy.
4. Regular visits to the dentist
Regardless of how well a person takes care of their teeth, regular visits are still important. This gives the person's dentist an opportunity to detect issues early in their development and dental cleanings are performed during these routine visits. Harmful tartar — which cannot be removed by brushing and flossing — is removed during cleanings.
Doing the four things listed above goes a long way when it comes to keeping teeth healthy and decay free. It only takes a few minutes each day and will save the patient time and money that would otherwise be spent at the dentist's clinic.
Benefits of preventative oral care
Keeping gums and teeth healthy is not the only benefit of preventative oral care. Other benefits include:
- Saves lots of money
- Saves time
- Avoids dental complication
- Prevents unnecessary pain and suffering
