The Risks That Wisdom Teeth Are in Hard to Clean Areas

The Risks That Wisdom Teeth Are in Hard to Clean Areas from Trophy Smile Studio in Trophy Club, TXWhen you reach your 20s, wisdom teeth should emerge. This third set of molars come in at the back of the mouth. You will likely have two of these teeth on the top and bottom, though some people have fewer than four. Commonly, dentists recommend getting these removed, and it is not difficult to see why. These teeth make your mouth crowded and create problems for existing teeth. There can also be oral health and hygiene implications, as these teeth can be a challenge to keep clean.

More about wisdom teeth

The third set of molars come for people at different times. Some people may see them as early as age 17, while for others, the teeth may emerge in the mid-20s. Most individuals, however, will get these teeth somewhere in the late teens or early 20s. The teeth are not vital for chewing, though dentists and other health professionals believe they once were. Because there is such a tight space for these teeth, it can be painful. There is also a risk of damage to existing teeth.

Brushing problems

Dentists encourage patients of all ages to brush with fluoride-based toothpaste at least twice a day. Brushing after meals and before going to bed is particularly important. Individuals should spend enough time on each tooth to keep them clean. Because wisdom teeth are so far back in the mouth, people often forget to hit them with the toothbrush.

Other people may be lazy and do not devote enough attention to them because of the difficulty in brushing in the area. These teeth can also come in at odd angles. This will make them crooked or twisted. Because of this, it can be challenging to brushing the entire surface and keep the tooth free of bacteria.

Flossing problems

Flossing does not have to occur multiple times a day but should be a daily practice. It is equally as important to floss to avoid dental problems. Patients tend to miss wisdom teeth because of the challenge and awkwardness in reaching them with floss. The difficulties may be frustrating and cause the individual to stop trying to floss the teeth or rush through the task.

Cavities

When brushing and flossing are ineffective or nonexistent, cavities can form. This happens when the person does not remove food particles, which turn to plaque. This sticky substance then hardens into tartar, eating away at the enamel layer. Eventually, holes can start to appear in the tooth.

Infections

Untreated, cavities can grow and become more serious. Bacteria can invade the tooth, reaching the pulp and roots of wisdom teeth. Infections can develop, which affects the health of the tooth and the entire mouth. An infection can eventually spread throughout the body.
